If you are planning to go to Ladakh in winters, I would suggest you to go by air instead of going by road because the route from Manali to Leh will be closed throughout the entire winters as it passes through some of the highest mountain passes in the world.
Not anymore, there are several roads that have been constructed as of now for army purposes only and civilians are not allowed to drive on them unless you have a permit from a very high-level authority. Umling La pass is currently the highest motorable road in the world at an elevation of 19,300 feet.
Nubra valley is one of the prettiest and the most adventurous valley of Ladakh, it is an actual cold desert at such an elevation where you will find sand dunes and double humped Bactrian Camels in the middle of the mountains.
You can travel to Ladakh via Sonmarg, Drass and Kargil if you are taking the Srinagar route. The distance from Srinagar to Leh is 419 kms and on the way you will be crossing Zoji La pass, a famous and very adventurous pass in Kashmir.
