Nanda Devi is the second highest peak of India after Kanchenjunga in Sikkim and 23rd highest in the world. Nanda Devi Peak is located in the Greater Himalayas of the Garhwal region in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Goriganga Valley and Rishiganga Valley surrounding the Nanda Devi peaks along with other mountains encircled in the east and the west. Nanda Devi is a two-peaked mountain where the western peak is tallest at an elevation of 7,817 meters officially known as Nanda Devi Mountain and the eastern peak at an elevation of 7756 meters known as Sunanda Peak meaning Sister of Nanda was formally known as  Nanda Devi East. Both the peaks together are known as Nanda Devi and Sunanda Devi. The Nanda Devi mountain’s height of 4300 meters is covered with snow throughout the year. Rishiganga river flows the melted glacier of the Nanda Devi gorges. Several streams and rivers flow from the melted glaciers of Nanda Devi later they groove into the Rishiganga river that further joins one of the tributaries of river Ganga, Dhauliganga which then joins Alaknanda at Vishnuprayag.

Nanda Devi National Park, also known as Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. It was declared as a National Park in the year 1982. Later in the year 1988, the Valley of Flowers and other areas were marked under Nanda Devi National Park and declared World UNESCO Heritage Site and IUCN listed it in the category of Strict Nature Reserve as Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Park. Nanda Devi National Park is spread around 5000 sq. km at an elevation of around 7000 meters around the area of Nanda Devi Peak. The Park has remained untouched and still in its pristine stage because of the restrictions and inaccessibility. The Ring of the outer region of Nanda Devi Sanctuary is formed by the Himalayan Peaks like Ronti, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Hanuman, Behtartoli Himal, Mrigthuni, and Dunagiri. While  Rishi Ganga originates at the confluence of two glaciers and flows through Rishi Gorge in the inner region. A total of  312 floral species like Fir, Birch, Juniper scrubs, Rhododendron, grasses, lichens, prone mosses, etc, and 17 other rare species are found. Nanda Devi has various types of leopards, Himalayan Black Bear, Snow leopard, Goral, Bharal, Himalayan Tahr, Common Langur, Himalayan Musk Deer, Brown Bear, etc are found in abundance and over 100 bird species are found here.
