About Chamoli

Chamoli is a district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand bounded by Tibet to the north and Pithoragarh and Bageshwar, a small district of Uttarakhand to the east, Almora to the south and Rudraprayag to the west. Chamoli can be considered a hotspot of pilgrimage destinations as well as other interesting attractions. And Chamoli is the place where the first Indian Forest Conservation movement i.e Chipko movement started. It proves the most eye-catching natural assets in terms of its scenery, valley, water edge dramatic landforms, or even the unique climatic cardinalities also the name itself comes from Sanskrit words i.e chandramoli which Chandra means Moon and Moli mean wear moon on the head which is Lord Siva in Hindu.

Chamoli Geography

Chamoli is a beautiful district of Uttarakhand state of India which comes under the Kumaon division. Its geographical area is about 7,520 km sq and the elevation of Chamoli is 1300m above sea level. The section of the range is deeply cut by water from Alaknanda river, the direction of masses mountain is in North to south direction and it is divided by two major division, an imaginary line i.e east to south between the village. The northern divisions are mostly higher range and snow cover peaks. 

Best Time to Visit Chamoli

Chamoli in Summer between April - July 

  • Chamoli is an evergreen destination, you can visit anytime in the year but the best time to visit Chamoli is summer since the temperature is around 30℃ degrees Celcius and the average temperature is between 15℃ to 30℃ which is perfect for a vacation along with a clear blue sky.

Chamoli in Monsoon between July- September

  • July to August is the best time to visit Chamoli for flower lovers since the valley of flowers is blossoming with magnificent stunning looks but the road is a bit prone to landslides as the town shower the beautiful greenery. And the monsoon rains cover the alpine meadows with endless endemic flora. However, the monsoon is not the best time for trekking and sightseeing because of sudden rainfall and landslide. 

Chamoli Winter between October - February

Chamoli in winter is like heaven, as there is snowfall which is the ideal time to visit and the temperature can fall between around -15℃ to 5℃ on average. Tourists who are adventure and winter enthusiasts can experience skiing. Know More

Vasundhara Waterfall

  • Vasundhara Waterfall is a heavenly enchanting destination that is believed to fall only for those people who are clean and pure from guilt otherwise the fall will divert away. The undiluted beauty and cool milieu of the waterfall are worth visiting along with its captive sights and eyecatching views situated at 5km from Mana which is set 145m background cliff and height 400ft. It can be reached by trekking for 6km i.e 2 hours from Mana Village.

Gopinath Temple

It is a famous temple situated at Gopeshwar dedicated to Lord Shiva which is the oldest shrine established by the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. Timing to worship during the day is 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM and the night is 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM i.e at the time of Raasleela. This temple is especially for Lord Shiva devotees and also one who wants to soak in the religious realm.

Nandprayag

It is a town in Chamoli District and was once the capital of the Yadu kingdom. It is the destination for spirituality and devotion along with beautiful landscapes. Hundreds of rivers and rivulets flow in Nandprayag situated at an altitude of 900 m surrounded by wonderful mountains and seamless natural sceneries. And believed that a holy dip can be capable of washing all the sins.

Shopping in Chamoli

There is no particular souvenir to take home in Chamoli but still, shopping here is a different kind of joy, there are lots of local bazaars where one can find a range of products especially traditional jewelry along with semiprecious stones since the place is a tribal area mostly Tibetan silver jewelry and shopping here is one of the famous activities.

Auli

There might be no unsurpassable natural beauty in Auli starting from apple orchards, old oak spine tress, etc. One can enjoy the magnificent views of the snow-draped mountains and also popular for skiing in India along with numerous ski resorts in Auli, located at 2800 meters above sea levels, there are also many pilgrimage destinations nearby.

How to Reach Chamoli

Chamoli by Air

  • There is no airport at Chamoli so the nearest Airport to Chamoli is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is situated at 222kms which is also nearest to Kedarnath, and it is well connected by motorable roads one can also hire a taxi from Airport to Chamoli.

Chamoli by Rail

  • The nearest Railway station to Chamoli is Rishikesh situated 202 km Once reach Rishikesh one can hire a taxi for a comfortable ride to Chamolior even bus facilities are also available.

Chamoli by Road

  • It is a well-connected network of roads connecting with major destinations by Uttarakhand as well as neighboring states.  As Chamoli is situated at NH58 it is easily accessible by buses and taxis. And one who wants to visit from Kedarnath can also hire a cab, the distance between Kedarnath to Chamoli is 161km which 6hr 30min drives.

Do's & Dont's in Chamoli

Do’s

  • Always advise carrying a water bottle.
  • Inbound tourists are mandated for e-pass.
  • Tourists are required to carry vaccination certificates for both doses if not need an RT-PC negative test report.
  • For local not necessary for RT-PCR test report.
  • Do wear a mask is advisable.

Dont’s

  • Do not hurt the sentiments of the people.
  • Removing shoes is advisable while entering the temple.
