Minicoy has a lighthouse constructed by the British in 1885, which is the furthest away from Kavaratti island, 200 kilometers to the south, and also the closest to the Maldives. Visitors are permitted to go all the way to the top. The incredible size of the lagoon, one of Lakshadweep's largest, the green of coconut trees, and the mirror-like surface of an inland lake as it nestles in one corner of the island cannot be described in words. Minicoy has a distinct culture from any other island, with differences in dress, language, and cuisine. Minicoy has a cluster of ten villages known as Athiris, each of which is ruled by a Moopan. A stroll through the villages' winding lanes provides insight into the history.
