Bhitarkanika is located between Paradip and Chandipur. It is famous for its highly dense Mangroves forest. The name Bhitarkanika is formed by two Odiya words Bhitar means interior and Kanika means extraordinary beautiful. This place is one of the largest mass nesting grounds for Olive Ridley Turtle which is one of the most endangered spices. Nearly every year about one million turtles layover an 80million egg's on the famous Gahirmatha Beach which is inside Bhitarkanika Mangrove Forest. This largest mangrove forest provides shelter to around more than 50 species of Mangroves, also more than 160 species of birds, and the largest population of saltwater crocodiles. Once a time this place has m recorded as the world's largest saltwater water crocodile which was (around 23ft 4 in) and its weight was 2000kg. Finally, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1975.
