Bhimbetka is the rock shelter cave near Bhopal. These caves are from a prehistoric era. As per the legends, the name Bhimbetka is derived from Bhimbaithka which means the sitting place of Bhim. There are approximately 760 rock shelter caves out of which 500 have a beautiful painting of the paleolithic and mesolithic periods. The place is just 25 km away from Bhojpur. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and is now taken care of by the Archeological Survey Of India. These caves are surrounded by Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary.
