Yamunotri History

Yamunotri Dham is located on the western side of Garhwal Himalayas, in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The source of River Yamuna i.e Yamunotri is also one of the four sites of the Char Dham pilgrimage. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides and situated in proximity to the Indo-China border, known for offering peace and tranquillity, and proudly stands in the enormous mountain peaks of Kalind, Yamuna is also known as Kalindi. The second most sacred river is also originated from the river Yamuna. Gangotri and Yamunotri are the origin places of two rivers i.e Ganga and Yamuna which are about 45 km in distance. According to the Hindu myth, Gangotri is a place where King Bhagirath performed penance after River Ganga came down on the Earth. The goddess Yamuna is believed to be the daughter of Sun and the twin sister of Yama which means the god of death also the term Yama means ‘’lady of life’’. It is also said that the bath in the Yamuna can cleanse all the sins and also protect them from a painful death, also in Hindu mythology Yamuna is in the higher ranks of the divine.

Yamunotri Dham Geography

Yamunotri is located in the Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, situated on the flank of Bandarpoonch Parvati at an elevation of 3292 m above sea level. The attraction at Yamunotri is the temple and the holy thermal springs at Janki Chatti i.e 7 km. The sacred Yamuna comes down into Saptarishi Kund and gushes to a series of waterfalls southward. Kalind Parbat is located west of Bandarpoonch, the dominant mountain of Garhwal, and divides the Yamuna from the Ganges. According to the Hindu myth, the peak Banderpooch means Bander i.e Monkey referring to Lord Hanuman, and Pooch i.e Tail referring to Lord Hanuman’s tail. The Yamunotri is 21km from Sanya Chatti, 176km from Chamba, 236 from Rishikesh, and 278km from Dehradun.

Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri is located in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas mountain and is a famous destination. This temple is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna and has a black marble idol of the Yamuna goddess with an elevation of 3293m above sea level and surrounded by beautiful mountains on every side of the temple. Out of four Char Dham yatra, this Yamunotri is the first one for pilgrims. There are two hot springs present in the Yamunotri i.e Surya Kund which has boiling water properties that are hot enough to cook and Gauri Kund which has lukewarm water that is suitable for bathing. A small trek is needed to reach here, from Janki Chatti, 5km, and the town of Hanuman Chatti, 13km. The best time to visit here is between May- October and the timing is 6 AM till 8 PM.

Surya Kund

It is located a few distances from Yamunotri which serves as a holy place and one of the most important thermal springs with an estimation of 88℃ which get its name from the Yamuna believe to be the father of Yamuna. And this hot spring is bounded by the snow-covered mountain which makes it unbelievably divine and picturesque, many pilgrims dip to refreshed and prepare prasad out of potato or rice mix with salt and tie in a muslin cloth to offer to the deity of Goddess Yamuna at the temple and takes back home by the devotees which are believed that eating the prasad will fulfill all the wishes and desires.

Janki Chatti

Janki Chatti is a small town located on the way about 4 km from Yamunotri also a starting point to trek to reach Yamunotri which takes around 3 hours. It is situated at an elevation of 2650 m above sea level and is famous for the hot springs and believe dipping in a hot spring will be sacred where pilgrims take a dip before starting their trek to Yamunotri. There is also a good facility for budget-friendly accommodation like ashrams, hotels, and lodges. Not only accommodation there also numerous restaurants and eateries but foods like alcohol, non-vegetarian are prohibited here. The trek to reach Yamunotri from here took completely a day and stay overnight mostly.

Saptarishi Kund

It is located about 6 km from Yamunotri which is a high lake source from Yamuna river at an elevation of 4421m above sea level. It is believed that the Kund is revered as the seven sages namely Rishi, Kashyap, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vasisthaand Jamadagni, Gautama, Viswamitra to have performed penance here. And to reach Saptrishi Kund one needs to take 2-3 days which is considered to be the most difficult treks in the state, above that there is no defined path and routes and usually covered here is no predefined paths and the route is usually cod with ice. The Glacial lake is half km long and surrounded by rocky glaciers and the upper parts of the mountain range are created by Bandarpunch Mountain. There is a little campground between two rivulets to set up a tent there and take a rest situated at around 5km up the slant. Along the trek, it will come across many beautiful flowers and herbs with fascinating scenic views.

Kharsali

It is located 5km from Yamunotri and the village is known as Khushimath, 1 km from Janki Chatti, 9 km from Hanuman Chatti, and 6km from Yamunotri, also known as Khushimath situated at an elevation of 2678m above sea level. On Akshaya Tritiya ( an annual Hindu and Jain spring festival), from Yamunotri Temple Ma Yamuna is shifted here and on Bhai Dooj( a festival celebrated by Hindus on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha), the statue along with Lord Someshwara is returned to Yamunotri for the next 6 months And Khushimath houses are considered to be the oldest Shani Dev Temple in India as well as the village is surrounded by snow-capped Garhwali mountain and many deities brought here for worship. It is also a good camping spot and popular picnic spot because of the wonderful natural springs and waterfalls and picturesque surroundings. Two mystery Urns are kept untouched which are believed to be any unforeseen danger to self or family and these Urns change their position themselves on Purnima and Amavasya (lunar phase).

Hanuman Chatti

Hanuman Chatti is located at a distance of 13 km from Yamunotri, 8 km from Janki Chatti at an elevation of 2400 m above sea level situated at the confluence of Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna rivers, also offers a range of accommodation facilities. It is a halting-place for pilgrims during Char Dham Yatra and perfect for experiencing the nature and the life of the countryside. This place is also popular as a trekking spot towards Darwa Top and Dodi Tal which takes 6 hours through lustrous meadows and aromatic hill fragrance of Himalayan shrubs. There are many small temples mostly dedicated to Hanuman and within the interiors of the temple, there is an image of Lord Hanuman carrying a mountain. On the left of the temple there’s a Samadhi of Hanuman Giri i.e a saint who lived and meditated in Hanuman Chatti and on top of this there’s again Shiva Linga.

Barkot (approx 33 Km from Yamunotri)

Barkot is located on the way about 33 km away from Yamunotri. The Ganga and Yamuna river passes through this small town and is known for its trekking trails, white water rafting, and stunning view of Bandarpooch mountain as well as have one of the ancient temples and best for meditation. This untouched hilly town is also best for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts situated at an elevation of 1220m above sea level, perfect for a stopover for Hindu devotees heading at Char Dham Yatra and famous for challenging trekkings trails along with scenic panoramas. From Barkot one can witness the magnificent Banderpoonch peak and Himalayan ranges and the perfect destination to unwind at seeking both spiritual experience magical divine ambiance natural environment and adventure enthusiasts.

Raithal Village (approx 25.5 Km from Yamunotri)

Raithal Village is a beautiful village in Uttarkashi district which is 25.5 km from Yamunotri at an elevation of 1800m above sea level amidst the lush greenery and is popular for trekkers as a base camp for Dayara Bugyal. This place is not on the tourist map but the thriving local community will make surprised by their beautiful lifestyle of self-supporting, traditional homestay, etc and their way of houses that build on the line of traditional Garhwali architecture makes the village more enchanting and attractive. In this village trekking and cycling can be the best thing to do, one can also rent a bicycle from Tourist Rest House and explore the majestic village. There is also a great festival celebrated by the village i.e Phulyar Mela which involves the plucking of Brahma Kamal flowers believe that these flowers are rare, finding them is a very auspicious sign.

Dayara Bugyal

It is located in Uttarkashi and about 40 km from Yamunotri, Uttarkashi is popular for trekking and camping at an elevation of 3639 m above sea level. It is ideal for long weekends, perfect for beginners to start a trek that goes through open lush green and dense forest with the vast expansion of green meadow. The trek mostly starts from Barsu village and down to Raithal. During winter Dayara Bugyal turns into snow land which is perfect for skiing and many other snow activities. From the peak, one can witness the views of Garhwal Himalayas, Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, etc

Best Time Visit Yamunotri Dham

The best time to visit Yamunotri is between May-June and September-November. Yamunotri is cold all year and winters make most activities difficult. Tourists visiting during the month of March (mid-march) will witness the great festival of Phool Devi and Basant Panchami festivals during February/March, etc. with a more colorful and joyful side of Yamunotri.

Yamunotri in Summer (April - July)

Summer is the best time to visit Yamunotri for an exciting and pleasant trip that offers perfect weather and temperature to explore the pilgrimage realm. The temperature in Yamunotri during winter is between 10℃- 30℃. Around the month of April, the Yamunotri Temple’s door is open to the public, and visiting the temple on bright sunny days and cold night is ideal timing to visit the temple as well as trekking. There might also be sudden rainfall during the summer season.

Yamunotri in Monsoon (July - September)

The temperature during the monsoon season in Yamunotri is between 23℃ to 30℃. Plan My Package suggests, not exactly a good time to visit Yamunotri owing to the frequent landslides, and sudden heavy rainfall. There is a high chance of massive cloud bursts so not recommended for sightseeing here during monsoon but the view of the town shower is magnificent to witness with a hot coffee from the room. Yamunotri in Winter (October - March)

The winter in Yomunotri is harsh and freezing with a temperature between -7°C to 10°C, ideal tome to visit to explore the sites but when the temperature drops to minus roads are close of the time since there experience heavy snowfall in the month of January and February. Plan My Package suggests the beginning of the winter is the best time to visit Yamunotri. Weather during winter is extreme including blizzards and heavy snowfall.

How to reach Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri by Air

The nearest airport to reach Yamunotri is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun which is about 86 km from Yamunotri since there is no direct flight connection from Yamunotri. If possible one can also go for helicopter service from Dehradun. One can hire a taxi/cab from outside the airport which is easily available and proceed to Yamunotri. International travelers or travelers traveling from Delhi can fly over to Dehadhun which is 207 km by air.

Yamunotri by Train

The nearest railway station is the Rishikesh railway station which is 211km from Yamunotri. There is no connectivity from Rishikesh, one can take a taxis/cab or buses plying on the route. And there’s also the availability of shared jeeps or vehicles from Haridwar or Rishikesh. Haridwar, Dehradun, Kotdwarand Kathgodam railway stations are also a few stations that can reach Yamunotri.

Yamunotri by Road

There is no direct connectivity of road to reach Yamunotri one can visit via road through nearest road stop i.e Uttarkashi, 122km from Janki Chatti and the nearest Jeep stop where trekking trip can begin to reach which is 4km. And there is also an option for horses and palanquins for rent for those u don’t want to trek on foot. The best route to visit here is via Dehradun and Yamuna is well connected to Haridwar, Dehradun, Barkot, Janki Chati, and Hanuman Chatti. It is also connected by bus services of Samyukt Rotation Yatayat Vyavstha Samiti to Rishikesh;26km, Haridwar;226km, Kedarnath; 387, and other regions.
