Sonamarg

History

Sonamarg is a hill station covered by the summits of Amarnath, Sirbal, and Kolhoi. This destination is a renowned tourist spot located in Jammu and Kashmir. Sonamarg and districts around it were under the supremacy of King Pravarasena II, 2000 years ago. Srinagar, Sonamarg, and the neighboring districts then came under the supremacy of the Mauryan Region. During this period, Buddhism thrives. Later, Kushanas took supremacy over the region in the 1st century AD. Later, it came under the supremacy of Ujjain’s Vikramaditya, and during the 6th century, Huns commanded it for a shorter period of time. Later, it decks under the regions of innumerable small kings.

During the 14th century, Sonamarg and other important parts of Kashmir and the neighboring regions went under the Mughal rule. Correspondingly to history, Emperor Akbar deceived King Yusuf Shah Chak into controlling Kashmir and neighboring regions to the Mughal Empire. After the collapse of the Mughal Era in the 18th century, the region was controlled by smaller regions and then came under the rulers of Sikhs in the 19th century, and then under British rule, in a period of few decades. Sonamarg did not fall into British rule for a longer period as it was identified to Gulab Singh through the major valleys of Kashmir. Under a concord between Gulab Singh and the British, Kashmir along with Sonamarg became a magnificent state and endured under the supremacy of Gulab Singh until independence. In 1947, Sonamrg was conquered by India.
