Mussoorie is believed to be derived from the word 'Mansoor,' which refers to a shrub native to the area. Locals tend to refer to the town as 'Mansoori.'
Mussoorie was established indirectly as a result of the Gurkhas' conquest of the Garhwal and Dehra in 1803 under Umer Singh Thapa. After that, it was only natural that British interests would clash with the Gurkhas' expansionist policies at some point. The inevitable conflict broke out on November 1, 1814, and by 1815, Dehradun had been cleared of the Gurkhas, and by 1819, it had been annexed by the British to the district of Saharanpur.
