Kinner Kalish is one of the most sacred as well as one of the main mythical adobes of Lord Shiva, based in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Greater Himalayas, Zanskar, and the Dhauladhar are the three main mountain ranges that compile the beauty of Kinnaur.  Kinner Kailash is one of 5 Kailash. The Kailash represents the home of Lord Shiva who resides on the top of these peaks. Shivalingam at the peak of Kinnar Kailash mountain changes its colour during the course of the day and one can only experience it if the climate conditions are in your favour and the sky is absolutely clear. As the place is associated with Lord Shiva, Kinner Kailash is known to be a sacred place according to Hindu and Buddhist Mythology. All the Kailash in all over India and Nepal are unclimbable mountains peaks due to mythological reasons and are quite difficult to trekk. The other Kailash mountains are The Kailash Manasarovar, Adi Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev, and Manimahesh Kailash. The height at which one can reach during the trek is about 4800m above sea level while trekking for about 14 km from Tangling village, which is the base camp of the Kinner Kailash trek

Geography Of Kinner Kailash

The Kinner Kailash trek that starts from Tangling village is located at 2148 M (7050 ft) above sea level near the Satluj river bank. One needs to cross the river by the Shontong bridge to reach the village or can use the ropeway trolley to reach the village. The village has green lush trees all around with the aggressive river Satluj, as one trek to the top, the tree line ends and one comes in open grasslands, as he/she moves more towards the top of the mountain one comes in contact with the rock and big boulder sections passing through which one gets to the Shivling of Lord Shiva that is at 4800m above sea level.

Trekking to Kinner Kailash

Trekking to Kinner Kailash is one of the best-experiencing activities one must try (on own risk) as trekking to Kinner Kailash is considered as one of the toughest and difficult treks in the region because of the steep ascend for the trek. Trekking here can only be done from June till October, the months of July till Mid September is not preferred due to heavy rainfall and cloud burst that are common in the Kinnaur region during monsoon. Kinner Kailash also carries a lot of Hindu cultures as it is considered the meeting point of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva for which Goddess Parvati herself created the Parvati Kund. It is also believed by the local folklore that Lord Shiva conducts a meeting with all gods and goddesses at Kinner Kailash in the winters.

Sangla Valley

Sangla Valley, referred to as the "pass of light" in Tibetian terms is located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh and is considered one of the most beautiful valleys of Kinnaur. Sangla village which is situated at the banks of river Baspa is also called the Baspa valley, the Sangla valley has a perfect picturesque where one can see huge snow-capped mountains, a river and a beautiful open valley all at once. One can explore the Kamru Fort and enjoy the beautiful valley of Sangla where you can see beautiful flora and fauna including the Apple orchards and if you are an adventure enthusiast person then River Crossing, rock climbing, rappelling are a must to do adventure activities.

Reckong Peo

Reckong Peo or Peo as called by the locals is the headquarters of the district of Kinnaur, situated at 2290m above sea level, one of the most amazing towns of Himachal Pradesh to view and the majestic  Himalayas. Even one can experience the local Kinnauri Tradition and the temple of Kothi Mata also known as Chandika Devi situated in Kinnaur. The summer season of Reckong Peo is has a moderate climate and the weather is quite pleasant which makes it the perfect time to visit Reckong Peo whereas, at the time of the winter season, the weather gets too cold and chilly. 

Kalpa

The small village of Kinnaur that is just 3 km away from Reckong Peo has magnificent views of the Himalayas and people love to visit this destination for the beautiful local architecture, the local temple called as Narayan-Nagini temple with a lot of history and culture, and the people, which makes this destination a perfect place to be at.

Suicide Point, Roghi

The suicide point of Roghi is just 3 km ahead of the village of Kalpa which is 2960m above sea level, one of the most adventurous and dangerous roads in Kinnaur with views that are beyond imagination with one of the best places to have photographs. The place is at just a height that the aggressive river of Satluj sees like a small water stream.

Best Time to Visit Kinner Kailash

Kinner Kailash in Summer (April- June)

Summer is the most favorable and best time to visit Kinner Kailash. Also, the Kinner Kailash in summers is most visited by trekkers. Though it is the summer season yet the weather is not hot and is pleasant enough to enjoy the vistas surrounding the Kinner Kailash. The temperature of Kinner Kailash in summer ranges from  8℃ to 30℃. Summers in Kinner Kailash can be visited from  April to June. 

Kinner Kailash in Winter ( October to March)

Kinner Kailash in winter can be visited only till early October only. However, winters in Kinner Kailash set from October to March, due to heavy snowfall the trek is closed for the season. The temperature in Kinner Kailash falls minimum to -5. 

 

Kinner Kailash in Monsoon ( July- August)

Kinner Kailash in winters is not accessible and safe due to the terrain and unpredictable rainfall. The monsoon season here starts in late July and lasts till August. 

How to Reach Kinner Kailash

Kinner Kailash by Air

Kinner Kailash’s nearest airport is the Shimla, Jubbarhatti airport which can be easily accessed from Delhi to Shimla the time to reach is about 1 hour and the flight cost is about 1500INR. From Shimla to reach the base campsite one needs to cover 215 km which takes approximately 6 hours to reach.

Kinner Kailash by Railways

The nearest railway station to Kinner Kailash is in Shimla for which one can travel from Delhi to Kalka and from Kalka to Shimla by train which will take approximately 22 hours to reach Shimla and then one can hire a taxi to Tangle it will take around 6 hours covering 215 km.

Kinner Kailash by Road

Like any other Himalayan destination, the base campsite Tangling for Kinner Kailash is well connected with the road through the national highway 5 that connects the region. It takes around 18 hours to reach by car or bus to Tabgling the base camp of Kinner Kailash.

Places to Stay in Kinner Kailash

During the trek in Kinner Kailash, one has the only option to stay in Kinner Kailash is in tents as the accommodation because of the high altitude, weather, and rough terrain in the region there is no place to stay except in the Kinner Kailash trek. One can get accommodation near the base camp region that is Tangling, Sangla, Bhabanagar, or Reckong Peo if they wish to stay in Kinnaur.

Do’s and Don’ts in Kinner Kailash

Do’s

  • Do wear a good pair of shoes while trekking.
  • Do carry warm clothes.
  • Do carry your essentials.
  • Do wear a mask.
  • Do carry your sanitizer.
  • Do take a local guide with you for the trek.
  • Do carry proper maps and medical kit
  • Do get registrations done before going to the trek.

Don’ts

  • Do not overstrain steep gradients.
  • Do not litter here and there in public places.
  • Do not spit in public places.
  • Do not disrespect the locals.
  • Do not take risks, that could cause injury.
