Kedarkantha History

The name Kedarkantha, speaks of itself. The word Kedar means Shiva and Kantha means peak in the pahadi language. It is said that Shiva came here for meditation as he wanted a place with no disturbance from living beings. But after reaching and meditating for a while, Shiva heard a cow mooing nearby, so he left the place and headed towards Kedarnath. A high-altitude lake, known as Juda ka Talab, lies en route to Kedarkantha. It is said that when Shiva was here for some time, he opened his hair locks and a water droplet fell from Shiva’s hair and formed a lake. Later it came to be known as Juda Ka Talab by the locals.

Kedarkantha Geography

Kedarkantha is a Himalayan mountain summit in Uttarakhand, India. Kedarkantha elevation is 12,500 feet which is equivalent to 3,800 m. Kedarkantha lies in the Uttarkashi district, which is a part of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. Various peaks can be seen from the Kedarkantha summit such as Swargarohini peaks Pangarchulla and Har ki Doon. The top view provides a breathtaking landscape picture of the snow-clad mountain region. Supin Range, villages, and Himachal and Garhwal valleys are lesser-known. The Dhauladhar range in Himachal Pradesh, Rupin valley, Har Ki Dun valley, and landscape views of the dense town of Purola can all be seen from the summit of the Kedarkantha peak. During the Kedarkantha trek, you will be able to witness mighty peaks like Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Swargarohini, and you will return with lots of adventurous memories. Kedarkantha is a snow trek hence highly recommended to visit the place from December to February.

Sankri Zipline

There is a zip line in Sankri Village and the distance is 750-meters and ends in the fields of Sour village. The equipment is UIAA certified, and also has a well-trained staff. Sankri Village

Sankri village is nestled in Uttarakhand's hilly terrains and offers as the gateway to Govind Pashu National Park, one of India's significant biodiversity hotspots. Sankri has many places from where tourists can get the most picturesque towns and majestic peaks of India, The Sankri village serves as the starting point for some of the greatest Himalayan trekking destinations like Kedarkantha Trek, Baraadsar Lake Trek, Dev Kyara Trek, and many more.

Sankri is 200 kilometres from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, and it takes 7 to 10 hours to drive from Dehradun to Sankri, depending upon your mode of travel. Sankri serves as a base camp for Kedarkantha.

Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha is a popular winter trek that has been termed as "Queen of Winter Treks." Kedarkantha is a well-known trek for the trekkers because of the snowy paths in the winter, the stunning view of majestic peaks like Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Swargarohini from the top, and the pathway is quite beautiful. Trekkers will never regret reaching the top at the elevation of 12,500 feet which is Kedarkantha Peak height. The trekking distance of Kedarkantha is approximately 20 km for a round trip.

Juda Ka Talab

Between Sankri village and the Kedarkantha peak, around at the height of 9,100 feet from sea level, is Juda ka Talab. Juda Ka Talab is a lake on such a high elevation. The lake is located in such a beautiful location with breathtaking Himalayan views. This area is used for overnight camping while on the trek by trekkers. Someshwar Mahadev Temple

Someshwar Mahadev temple is a majestic temple in Uttarakhand at Sankri village which is located in the Mori Block of Uttarkashi. Lord Shiva, the Hindu God, is worshipped in this temple. For the people of Sankri, this temple holds huge religious importance. Thousands of tourists travel from across the world to seek blessings at this sacred temple. Har Ki Doon (approx 28.1 Km from Kedarkantha)

The Har Ki Doon Trek is a pathway to paradise that will make you fall in love with its splendor. Har Ki Doon is a snowy trek and is suggested by experienced trekkers. Har Ki Doon trek can be done in both seasons, summer and winter seasons as it has different experiences. Har Ki Dun valley lies on the western edge of Garhwal in Uttarkashi district, is a popular destination among trekkers. The Har Ki Dun valley is a pleasant trek with amazing views of the Swargarohini peaks.

Ruinsara Lake (approx 8.2 Km from Keadarkaantha)

The trek to Ruinsara Lake through Govind National Park, which is known for its wildflowers, particularly orchids. Some of the most picturesque woods can be seen in this area. The area was promoted by Jack Gibson, a Doon school teacher in the late 1940s. The peaks and glaciers in  Banderpoonch Range are a mountaineer's fantasy. Ruinsara Lake is known for its wild flora. From Netwar village, the path follows the Tons river up via the picturesque villages of Ganga, Seema, and Osla. It is suggested from Plan My Package recommends spending one day at the lake as it is suitable for exploring the Banderpoonch glacier, which serves as the base camp for the trek to Black Peak.

Best Time To Visit Kedarkantha

Except for the monsoon season, Kedarkantha Trek is an evergreen attraction. On the other hand, Spring and summer are ideal for trekking in decent weather. As Kedarkantha is a snowy trek, the adventure in the winter season creates a vital level of difficulty for those who wish to be more adventurous. The best time to visit Kedarkantha Trek is between December and March as it attracts lots of tourists to this place.

  • Throughout the year, the temperature in Kedarkantha ranges from -2 to 17 degrees Celsius.
  • Kedarkantha In Summers: During the summer, temperatures range from 6 degrees Celsius at night to around 20 degrees Celsius during day time. If you visit the place in the summer, you'll have a view of the wonderful forest.
  • Kedarkantha In Winters: During the winter, the temperature in Kedarkantha varies between 13-18 degrees Celsius during the day to -7 degrees Celsius at night. The best time to be on the trek in winters is from December to April as you can see frozen Juda ka Talab.

Kedarkantha by Air

  • Jolly Grant Airport(DED) in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Kedarkantha. You can then take a bus to reach Sankri Village, from there you can start the trek to reach Kedarkantha.

Kedarkantha by Train

  • Dehradun railway station (DDN) is the nearest to Kedarkantha, after that you can take a private taxi or bus to reach the nearest village that is Sankri. The trek to Kedarkantha starts from here.

Kedarkantha by Road

  • You can either drive to Sankri village or you can go to Dehradun by bus and from there you can have another bus or taxi to reach Sankri village.
  • The distance between Sankri to Kedarkantha is 6 km.
  • The distance between Delhi to Sankri is 468 km.
  • The distance between Dehradun to Sankri is 196 km.
  • The distance between Pune to Sankri is 1,845 km.
