Kanatal

Kanatal History

Kanatal, where ‘Kana’ means dried and ‘Tal’ means pond in the local dialect of Tehri Garhwal. When a lake got dried up in the area, the local people started calling it Kanatal.

It is also believed that Sati, the daughter of Daksh the King, wanted to marry Shiva, but as he had a bad image of Shiva, the king was against this. However, Sati got married to Shiva against her father's choice. After that, Daksh performed a yajna and Bramha, Vishnu, and other Gods and Goddesses but Shiva was invited. Due to this, Sati was deeply hurt and insists Shiva come, despite being uninvited. Upon Shiva’s arrival, Daksh insulted him in front of everyone. Sati was devastated by this insult of her husband by her father and jumped into the fire and died. After this incident, Shiva opened his third eye and started performing Tandava in anger and took Sati's dead body out of the fire and roamed the earth, carrying his dead wife on his shoulders. The whole universe was in trouble and to stop this, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body into 5 parts. Wherever her parts of the body fell, the place is believed to be converted into Shaktipeethas. The head part of the Sati fell here at Sikunda(Where the head fell) and eventually, the place came to be known as Surkanda. Surkanda Devi temple is considered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Goddess Sati.
