Kalpa History

Kalpa is a small picturesque village in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a paradisiacal destination for nature lovers and is inhibited by the Kinnauri people also known for its apple orchards. The people of Kalpa follow Buddhism and Hinduism. Kalpa is the perfect opportunity for spiritual enlightenment in the lap of the Himalayas along with many beautiful Buddhist monasteries.  From here one can witness Mount Kailash, Mt. Raldang, and Jorkanden which is surrounded by tall mountains and glittering peaks of the Kinnaur Kailash range and boasting a fantastic environment with the majestic visual spectacle of its changing colors throughout the day. Kalpa also has numerous attractions and treks to do with stunning vistas and lush green forests of pine trees, that will enthrall tourists with its tranquillity and serenity.

Kalpa Geography

Kalpa is located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal with an average elevation of 2960m above sea level,  7 kilometres from Reckong Peo, and 14 kilometres from Shimla Kaza Highway on the NH5. Kalpa is an ancient village with stunning art and architecture. The temperature in Kalpa is enjoyable and perfect for a holiday among friends and families, located at the base of the Kinnaur Kailash range the Shivling peaks rise up to 6,000 m. In ancient times it was formed from a part of Kanaurran and majored inhabitants were Valhika, Kamboja, and Panasika. And it was later divided into Chiefdoms between these power struggle ensued small kingdoms. After the fall of Mughal and British, Kinnaur and the cities of Kalpa formed and were known as Chini Tehsil at that time. And merged into Mahasu district then re-organized, owning to the ethnic and cultural considerations.

Chakka, Kalpa

It is located just 0km from Kalpa and is a very famous trekking destination for adventure enthusiasts with an altitude of 15000 ft above sea level which will be a thrilling adventure up the hill along the gurgling water channel. The uphill journey takes almost 2-3 hours long and it will take about 1.5 hours going downhill.  And the best timing to go trekking at Chakka is from morning around 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. One can witness the astonishing sunrise from the Kinner Kailash mountain, breathtaking views of the mountain range, and beautiful views of Kalpa village while on the trekking trails.

Narayan-Nagini Temple

Narayan-Nagini Temple is located 1km from Kalpa which is about 5000 years old  Situated on the top of a hill at Chini Village. It is the best destination for local sightseeing after reaching Kalpa and a perfect example of Kinnauri craftsmanship constructed in the traditional Tibetan Pagoda style of architecture dedicated to Goddess Durga of Hindu. It is also considered to be one of the major attractions of the village and a must-visit.

Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery

It is located 2 km from Kalpa a small village in the Kinnaur district with a height of 2960m above sea level which is another attraction of local craftsmanship for history buffs that is an extremely old monastery, founded in 950-1055 AD.  One can experience the life of Tibet here and also will get a glimpse of Kinnaur culture and its colourful villagers

Kinnaur Kailash

It is located 2km from Kalpa, the tribal district of Himachal Pradesh, 250 km away from Shimla, on the Hindustan Tibet Road also known as the Kinner Kailash, which is 6500 m above sea level known as a land of myths and fantasies. Being the biggest attraction sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist regions and home to a 79 ft tall Shiva linga which is said to change colour every hour of the day. One can also trek here but a challenging trek that takes 2-3 days to reach the top of the mountain. The surroundings of Kinner Kailash are magical eye-catching views including beautiful villages, gushing rivers, breathtaking valleys, lush green orchards, and majestic mountains with rich flora & fauna.

Suicide Point

It is located 3km from Kalpa just 10 min walk from the village on the road connecting Kalpa with Roghi. This attraction is for those who want to experience thrilling and experience the feeling of someone wanting to kill themselves at a straight several hundred feet that drop from the mountain which is a very dangerous trench and vertical slopes. But the surrounding of this place has an enchanting atmosphere and the breathtaking mountain scenery gives tourists something more interesting, as well as a walk to this point, will take through the delicious sight of apple orchards. And one can also reach this pot through a car and enjoy the stunning landscape.

Roghi Village

It is located about 5 km from Kalpa in the same direction as the Suicide point then ends at Roghi Village. The drive to the village is both scenic and adventurous as the road is hanging by the cliff. Situated at the slope of a mountain famous for a  true reflection of the Kinnaur lifestyle and apple orchards as well a small Narayan temple is worth visiting. One who is fascinated by ethnic tradition can soak into this village that is also beholds enriched with flora and fauna. 

Sapni Fort

Sapni Fort has located 10 km from Kalpa Situated near the Sapni Village which is the epitome of architectural grandeur and wonderful surroundings, a paradise for art and architecture lovers comprising two buildings integrated into one. This fort has seven stories high and has a temple dedicated to Goddess kali on the fifth floor, constructed by King Padam Singh of Rampur which also displays some impressive woodwork and carvings. The Sapni Fort faces the valley and is one of the most popular destinations in Kalpa. One can also explore the Sapni village, which is another beautiful village in the vicinity of Kalpa. 

Kamru Fort

It is located 11km from Kalpa at an altitude of 2,600 m above sea level and only 2 km from the beautiful Sangla Valley. Kamru Fort is a masterpiece artistic legacy of the past and converted into a temple dedicated to Kamakhya Devi, Hindu Goddess. From this fort, one can experience a glimpse of breathtaking views of the whole valley, stream, the famous apple orchards, etc. The fort comprises of wooden balcony with a large idol of the goddess Kamakhya Devi on the third floor and at the entrance, it welcomes its visitors with a huge image of Lord Buddha on the main gate.

Basteri Village (approx 45.1 Km from Kalpa)

It is located about 40 km from Kalpa and 8 km from Sangla, known for its picturesque surroundings and amazing landscapes. The path that leads to the village is surrounded by deodar trees and one has to cross a splendid natural bridge of cantilevered logs over it. There are two temples in this village dedicated to Lord Buddha and a temple of Lord Badri Narayan. Basteri is popular for handicrafts and handmade shawls to caps, Pine nuts and pinus gerardiana (chilguza) are also famous here.

Kothi (approx 84 Km from Kalpa)

It is located  84 km from Kalpa also known as Koshtampi located between Reckong Peo and Kalpa. It has a religious reverence due to the temple of Hindu god Bhairon baba and Goddess Chandika which is believed to slash the head of a demon who was terrorizing the region. The village is also known as Koshtampi and the temple is known both as Kothi temple and Chandika Devi temple. There is a beautiful gold image of the goddess in the temple and the perfect place for people who are enthusiasts of old art and architecture. This village is also famous for its temple with the beautiful backdrop of the majestic Kailash Mountains. 

Spiti Village (approx 218.9 Km from Kalpa)

It is located 214km from Kalpa which is around a 6-hour drive located at Spiti District with an elevation of 3810 m above sea level. The term Spiti means 'The Middle Land', as Spiti Valley separates India from Tibet and haven for adventure seekers and trekkers as it offers a range of treks through some of the most dreamlike landscapes witness majestic sceneries. Spiti Valley will welcome long winding roads and valleys of cold desert and snow-crowned mountains. It is the coldest place in the country with 250 days of sunshine in a year. The thick Himalayan snow cuts Spiti off from the rest of the country and only during the summer months, Spiti is directly accessible via motorway. Spiti is an adventure lover’s paradise, with several trekking trails that tourists can choose. 

Best Time to Visit Kalpa

  • The best time to visit Kalpa is during the summers i.e April to June. And if a tourist wants to experience the famous Apple orchard of Kinnaur blooming, then the best time to visit Kalpa is from September to October.

Summer in Kalpa (April-June)

  • Summer is the best time to visit Kalpa, with temperatures between 8°C to 24°C, the weather in Kalpa is pleasant during this time and the sky remains clear which is the perfect time to view the Kinnaur-Kailash ranges. It is ideal for sightseeing and adventure activities like rafting on the Sutlej River, trekking in Spiti Valley, and overnight camping, road trip, etc. And all routes, including treks and roads, are open during this time in full-swing, also considered as the peak season.

Monsoon in Kalpa (July-September)

  • During the monsoon season in Kalpa, the temperature goes up to an average of 20°C in the day to 8°C to 10°C in the night with an experience of moderate to heavy rainfall With unpredictable landslides. A lot of disruption in the transportation system is frequent in this area and slippery  Thus, advisable, an unsafe destination to travel to during these months. It Is not permitted to go sightseeing and do different activities outside, but this is also a great time to go to Kalpa to simply sit back and relax. The view of tall mountains hidden amid fog and the lush green meadows makes a photographer delight with its pristine atmosphere. So, it is advisable to check the weather forecast before planning a trip in the monsoon.

Winter in Kalpa (October-February)

  • Temperatures during the winter months rise only up to an average of 15°C to -10°C and it is delightful to visit during the initial winter month of i.e autumn since the entire valley takes on bright shades of orange, brown, and blue. It will witness a huge amount of snowfall and be a little dangerous for people traveling to Kalpa due to slippery roads. But, the view with snow-clad mountains, icy lakes, and the serene atmosphere has its charm which is worth enjoying and also one can go apple-picking and give a crate of fresh apples as a thoughtful souvenir. 

How to Reach Kalpa

Kalpa by Air

The nearest Airport to reach Kalpa is Kullu/ Bhuntar which is 225km, Shimla i.e 445km, and Kangra airport, Dharamsala which is about 406 from Kalpa, and the nearest international airport is in Chandigarh, at a distance of 335 km,  there's no direct airport to reach Kalpa, and Shimla Airport is well-connected to many major cities of the country. One can easily hire taxis from outside the airport or hire Government and Private Buses from the New and Old Bus Stands of Shimla or from Chandigarh Bus Station many buses are available for Reckong Peo which is 7 km away from Kalpa.

Kalpa by Train

The nearest railway station to Kalpa is Shimla, 244km that connects several major cities as well as the major railway station of Himachal Pradesh or Kalka Railway station 309 km that connects better with other cities of India. One can hire a bus or a taxi to reach Kalpa. 

Kalpa by Road

The best way to reach Kalpa is by road with experiencing side by side enchanting views i.e on NH22 which connects Kalpa to Shimla and other cities. The highway merges with the Hindustan-Tibet road bifurcates at Powari to Kalpa and is perfect for motorable roads and frequent bus runs during the summer months. There is another bus route through Manali and Rohtang pass that goes in the Parvati valley and is frequently used by tourists. For tourists traveling from Delhi or Chandigarh or any other place in North India. One can take HRTC buses that go to Reckong Peo from Delhi and Chandigarh. The road to Kalpa is populated with beautiful scenic landscapes and makes an unforgettable ride.
