About Kedarkanta

Kedarkantha is a Himalayan mountain summit in Uttarakhand, India. Kedarkantha which is a part of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Uttarkashi district. The name Kedarkantha, speaks of itself. The word Kedar means Shiva and Kantha means peak in the Pahadi language. It is said that Shiva came here for meditation as he wanted a place with no disturbance from living beings. But after reaching and meditating for a while, Shiva heard a cow mooing nearby, so he left the place and headed towards Kedarnath. A high-altitude lake, known as Juda ka Talab, lies en route to Kedarkantha ad is popular sightseeing during the Kedarkanta Trek. It is said that when Shiva was here for some time, he opened his hair locks and a water droplet fell from Shiva’s hair and formed a lake. Later it came to be known as Juda Ka Talab by the locals.

Kedarkantha by Air

The airport which is accessible from other parts of India to Uttarakhand in the Garhwal region is Jolly Grant Airport. Therefore, Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Kedarkantha. Further buses by UTC and taxis and cabs are also available to Sankri. Regular flights that operate here are Air India, Indigo, Go First, Vistara and SpiceJet.

Kedarkantha by Train

Further, the journey can be commenced by cabs, taxis, or buses to the starting point of the Kedarkanta trek, which is Sankri village. Dehradun railway station is actively accessible and trains from all major cities halt here. People from Mumbai can reach Haridwar by train as no trains from Mumbai to Dehradun are available.

People coming from the outskirts of Uttarakhand can reach Dehradun and further can drive or take a bus to Sankri which is the starting point for the Kedarkanta trek. Dehradun and Sankri are well connected and accessible from other cities of Uttarakhand. The distance from Dehradun to Sankri is approximately 187 km which can be covered within 6-7 hours. The trekking distance from Sankri to Kedarkanta is approximately 10 km.
