About Devprayag

Devprayag is a small and popular town in Uttarakhand, known for its divine aura and the confluence of River Alaknanda and River Bhagirathi that further flows as river Ganga. Devprayag Sangam is one of the last Panch Prayag (five confluences) of river Alaknanda. The name Devprayag derives from ‘Devo ka Prayag’ which means confluence of Gods.  Based on the history of Devprayag, it is home to Acharya, Pt. Chakradhar Joshi who was a scholar in Astronomy and Astrology, and in 1946, he established Nakshatra Vedha Shala. According to the mythological stories of Devprayag is the place where Lord Rama and his father King Dashratha performed penance. Another legend is that Goddess Ganga came to earth when Bhagirathi’s serious penance for the same with 33 Koti Gods and Goddesses choosing Devprayag as their holy abode. It is believed apart from the two rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi another river Saraswati meets at the confluence underground. Lord Shiva is worshipped here in the form of Linga with the name of Tondeshwar Mahadev, Dhaneshwar Mahadev. Tondeshwar temple is located just in front of the Sangam and is most crowded on the day of Mahashivratri as devotees come to offer Gangajal to lord Shiva. In winters, Devprayag is also home to priests of Badrinath who are known as Pandas.

Devprayag is at an elevation of 472 meters in the Tehri District of Uttarakhand. Devprayag is a small town and Nagar panchayat. Devprayag confluence is the confluence of river Bhagirathi and Alaknanda which further flows as river Ganga. Devprayag is enveloped by the Himalayan peaks of Giddhanchal Parvat, Dashrathanchal Parvat, Narsinghanchal Parvat

Nakshatra Vedh Shala Observatory

Nakshatra Vedh Shala Observatory is India’s first astronomical observatory established in 1946 by Acharya, Pt. Chakradhar Joshi a scholar of Astronomy and Astrology. Devprayag offers clear skies and a brighter vista of the stars. The place has several telescopes and several types of equipment for stargazing and several old manuscripts. Nakshatra Vedh Shala Observatory is near the entrance of Dak Bungalow gate. It is located on the hill. The timings of Nakshatra Vedh Shala Observatory are 6 am- 6 pm.

Brahm and Vasisht Kund

Devprayag Sangam is the confluence of two holy rivers Alakananda and Bhagirathi which merge here and flow as river Ganga. Devotees perform ablutions of the basins, kund of both the rivers. The Kunds of Devprayag on River Bhagirathi is Brahm Kund and the kund on river Alaknanda is Vashist Kund. There’s the third kund of Devprayag known as Surya Kund

Raghunathji Temple

Raghunathji Temple of Devprayag is dedicated to Lord Rama, with shrines of him, Goddess Sita, and his brother Laxmana. The temple is believed to be India’s one of the oldest temples of Lord Rama, another form of Lord Vishnu, built around 10,000 years around. Based on the legends, the temple has existed since the time of Lord Rama. Raghunathji Temple is located near the Devprayg Sangam. It is made of huge rocks. Also known as Tirukantamenum Kadi Nagar, one of the 108 Divyadesam that are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is named in 4 of the 18 Puranas; Padma Purana, Matsya Purana, Kurma Purana and Agni Purana. The river Saraswati flows from the foot of Lord Rama’s shrine.

Chandrabadni Temple (approx. 33.3km from Devprayag)

Chandrabadni Temple is one of the 52 Shakti peths in a tiny hamlet Jamnikhal. Chandrabadni temple abodes the shrine of Goddess Sati, located at an elevation of 2277 meters on Chandrabadni mountain which had its former name as Chandrakoot mountain. The temple can be reached after a small hike starting from Tehri road.

Srinagar ( approx. 36.2 km from Devprayag)

Srinagar is a historic town of Uttarakhand, located on the banks of Alaknanda River at an elevation of 560 meters, lying on the foothills of the Himalayas attracts several tourists from all around. The town of Srinagar holds the importance of a culture and education center. Srinagar is an important point of halt for accommodation during the Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Char Dam Yatra. Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple and Kilkileshwar Temple, established by Adi Shankaracharya dedicated to Lord Shiva are some of the most important temples of Srinagar. One of the best of Srinagar is the cultural event that is held for four days gathers all locals to celebrate it with complete zest.

Pauri  (approx.46 km from Devprayag)

Pauri is one of the prominent hill stations of Uttarakhand. Pauri is enveloped by dense thick dense woodlands and the snow-clad Himalayas. The city offers alluring views of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks, Banderpunch, Swargrohini, Gangotri Group, Jogin Group, Kedarnath, Talaiya Sagar, Karcha Kund, Sumeru, Satopant, Chaukhamba, Neelkant, Ghoriparvat, Hathiparvat, Nandiparvat, and Trishul. Some of the popular attractions in and around Pauri are Doodhatoli, Jwalpa Devi temple, Kandoliya Temple, Chaukhamba viewpoint. Pauri offers one of the most beautiful sunset views in Uttarakhand. Tehri Lake and Dam (approx. 60 km from Devprayag)

Tehri Lake at an elevation of 1700 meters is an artificial reservoir that came into existence during the construction of the Tehri Dam. Tehri lake is steadily becoming the new adventure destination for adrenaline rush lovers. The government is in plans to run water sports activities in Tehri lake. The water source here is the river Bhagirathi. Tehri Dam imposed at a height of 260 meters is India’s tallest dam and the World’s one of tallest dams. It is not only one of the famous tourist attractions of Uttarakhand but also an engineering marvel producing 1000 MW of hydroelectricity. It is built on the river Bhagirathi made up of half rock and half earth-filled embarkment. It is a vital dam of THDC India Ltd built-in 2006. The plan for the dam was constructed in the year 1961 and was in construction in the year 1978 but was halted due to financial and social issues and finally was completed in 2006.

Devprayag in Summers (March- June)

Summers in Devprayag have pleasant and calm weather between March and May rather than the extreme heat, credits to the lush green trees and the elevated mountains enveloping the Devprayag town. Summers are one of the best times to visit Devprayag as the clear sky and calm current of the Sangam make a perfect visit happen. Summers here are rejuvenating, also the river water gushing is cold and fresh gives the best site of the confluence. The average temperature of Devprayag during Summers is 16℃ - 36℃.

Devprayag in Monsoons (July- September)

Monsoons in Devprayag are of cold showers of rain, the town is more tranquil and green in monsoons. The River Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, and their confluence gush bubbling at their fullest. Due to the force of the flow, the water turns mudding, and the vista of the confluence isn’t clear otherwise the town is more mesmerizing with the backdrop of the greenery.
