Dehradun History

Dehradun is the Capital City of Uttrakhand, this place gives you a strong connection with Hindu tradition. The great king Ashoka ruled this city in the 1st century BC. Many rulers ruled this city which included Gurkhas, Mughals, Sikhs, and the Britishers. It is the most famous tourist destination in the world. Dehradun has been deriving its name from the two words, “dera” means home and “doon” means valley, and it lies between the Himalayas and the Shivaliks. The people of this city have been involved in economic activities like Biotechnology, Food Processing, Floriculture, and Tourism. It is mostly known for the many high society boarding schools and the most famous Indian Military Academy. The production of basmati rice is also grown in this beautiful city. Dehradun lies between the rivers of Yamuna and Ganga. Some major facts about beauty spot Dehradun are: The most Famous Sahastradhara spring is known for its sulphuric healing properties for any kind of skin diseases, It provides several training institutes of National importance like the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), India’s Zoological Survey (JSI), Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Defense Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL) and other Defense Establishments. Indian Military Academy, India’s Zoological Survey (JSI). The major Fairs and festivals celebrated in Dehradun are Jhanda Fair, Tapekshwar Mela, Bissu Fair, Mahasu Devtas’s Fair, Saheed Veer Kesri Chandra Fair, etc.

Dehradun Geography

Dehradun is situated on the route of tourist destinations like Rishikesh, Gangotri, Badrinath, and Haridwar. The geography of Dehradun is located at the centre of the Doon Valley in the state of Uttaranchal, comprised of the Garhwal Himalayas. During the summer months, temperatures range between 36°C and 16.7°C, and during the winter temperatures range between 23.4°C and 5.2° C. The Jolly Grant Airport is approx 25 km away from Dehradun and the city is connected by rail to all the major cities of India. Although the weather is pleasant throughout the year, April to July is the ideal time for travelling to Dehradun. The area of Dehradun is 196.5 km². The Longitude of the city is 78.0322 E and the Latitude of the city is 30.3165 N.

Forest Research Institute

Forest Research Institute was established in 1906 and named Imperial Forest Research Institute, it has a wonderful style of architecture. There is a Botanical Garden which is like a picnic place for the tourists. The entry fee for the institute is Rs10/-, and the guide fee is Rs50/-. The distance from Dehradun airport to Forest Research Institute is about approx 36.5km. 

Tibetan Buddhist Temple 

Tibetan Buddhist Temple is also known as Mindrolling Monastery which has been based in the upland of the Himalayas in Dehradun in North India. It is a place which is mostly visited by tourists. It has been surrounded by Gardens, a striking stupa, and a big space. The entry fee is free.

Robber’s Cave 

Robber’s Cave is a 600m long naturally formed cave, it is a perfect picnic spot for the tourists. It is a very peaceful place in Dehradun and the beauty of the river attracts many tourists. The distance from Dehradun is approx 8 km.

Shikhar Fall

Shikhar Fall is one of the most beautiful places to see in Dehradun and it is the most popular tourist place and for adventure lovers also. It has been covered by woodlands and mountains. The best time to visit this fascinating Shikhar Fall is between October to June. 

Jabarkhet Wildlife Reserve

Jabarkhet Wildlife Reserve is an unexplored forest stream covered in the orient red of Rhododendrons and the enthralling views of the Himalayas, it is one of the top tourist destinations in Dehradun. Jabarkhet Wildlife Reserve is the first privately-owned wildlife sanctuary of Uttarakhand. The entry fee is INR 350 per adult.

Lachhiwala

Lachhiwala is surrounded by Sal trees and escorted by deciduous shrubs, Lachhiwala is also known as a Nature Park. Tourists came here for activities like Trekking, Bird- Watching, Swimming and many other interesting activities. The entry fee for the child is INR 5 and for the adults is INR 10.

Places Near Dehradun

Mussoorie(approx 32.7 Km from Dehradun)

Mussoorie which is also known as “The queen of hill stations”, is one of the most popular hill stations in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. Its altitude is about 7000 feet above sea level and has a very cool and pleasant climate all through the year. Mussoorie is also very popular for honeymooners and families. The distance from Dehradun to Mussoorie is approx 32.7kms. The tourist attractions in Mussoorie are The Mall Road is famous for shopping and it is also known as “The hub of shopping in Mussoorie”.  Another major attraction of Mussoorie is the Ropeway to Gun Hill, it is the second-highest peak in Mussoorie. The best time to visit Mussoorie is between April and June.

Lakhamandal (approx 118.5 Km from Dehradun)

Lakhamandal is a well-known temple located in Chakrata, The god of the temple is Lord Shiva. Lakhamandal is a popular destination for Monuments of National Importance. The distance from Dehradun Railway Station to Lakhamandal is about approx 107 km. The Remains of several temples still exist in the Lakhamandal. Here, the Shivling is made of graphite and shines when pouring water on it. The illustrated architecture of the temple displays the richness of Indian heritage and it has been declared as a Monument of National Importance. 

Rishikesh (approx 43.7 Km from Dehradun)

Rishikesh is also known as the “Yoga Capital of the World '', the word Rishikesh means “Hairs or locks of sage”. Many locals and foreign tourists visit this place for peace and spirituality. Rishikesh is among the holiest places for Hindus. The distance from Dehradun Airport to Rishikesh is about approx 21 km. Rishikesh is the destination not only for pilgrimage but also for Yoga and Adventure Activities. There are two most famous Jhulas “The Ram Jhula” and “The Laxman Jhula”. Tourists must watch the Ganga Aarti which is being performed at Triveni Ghat. River Rafting in Rishikesh is most popular all over the country and the turbulent waves of river Ganga make it the most famous adventure activity of Rishikesh. The best time to visit Rishikesh is between October to February.

Chakrata (approx 87.2 Km from Dehradun)

Chakrata which is also known as a Magical Hill Station and is beautified by the Himalayan ranges, Chakrata is located at an elevation of 2118 meters. It is the most famous weekend getaway for Hikers and Backpackers. The distance from Dehradun to Chakrata is approx 87.2kms, the best time to visit is between April and June. Mundali is a most famous tourist spot and it offers the opportunity to experience skiing in winter. Some major tourist spots in Chakrata are Tiger Falls, Chilmiri Neck, Deoban, and many more.

Rajaji National Park (approx 57.8 Km from Dehradun)

Rajaji National park is both a National park and a Tiger Reserve and it is the most visited place by tourists in Haridwar. This park is situated at the Shivalik range of the Himalayas and ranges over approx 820kms. The specialty of the park is that it owns 250 Leopards, 11 Tigers, and 600 Elephants. The distance from Dehradun to Rajaji National Park is approx 57.5kms. The best time to visit is between November to June. The park is closed during the monsoon season. The entry fee is Rs. 150 per head for a 3 hours visit. Gypse rate for a 3 hrs safari trip is Rs. 2100. The cost of a guide is Rs. 600 for a general guide and Rs.1000-1500 for a better experience in wildlife.

How to Reach Dehradun

Dehradun by Air

You can take a flight to Jolly Grant Airport to reach Dehradun city and the airport is approx 31km away only. From the airport, you can find a taxi for yourself. Delhi has located 235 km from Dehradun and it connects to major cities in the country and around the world by air.

Dehradun by Train 

Dehradun is connected to most of the major parts of the country via rail. Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, etc. are connected to Dehradun. Some popular trains are Dehradun Shatabdi, Mussoorie Express, Nanda Devi Express, Doon Express, and many more.

Dehradun by Road 

The state-owned buses directly connect to Dehradun and almost all major cities in Uttrakhand, The private and public buses ply regularly between Dehradun and Delhi, besides buses also ply from Shimla, Kullu, Agra to Dehradun. 

Best Time to Visit Dehradun

The most appropriate time to travel to Dehradun is between March to June. This is the time when most people travel to Dehradun because the weather is so clear and is the best time to enjoy sights and do adventure activities. The maximum temperature during this time is 35 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 17 degrees celsius.

Dehradun in Summer

The summer of Dehradun is measured from March to June. The temperature rises to 35 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 17 degrees celsius. You can just take some light cotton clothes with you and you are good to go. This is the best season for tourists as the weather is so pleasant. 

Dehradun in Monsoon 

The monsoon of Dehradun is measured between July to September. The maximum temperature is 31 degrees and the minimum temperature is about 22 degrees. The rains make the place come alive and you will get to enjoy the lush green landscapes, because Dehradun is at the foothills of the Himalayan region, so it's safe to visit Dehradun during the rainy season.

Dehradun in Winter

The Winter of Dehradun is measured between October to February. The maximum temperature goes to 27 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature goes to 0 degrees celsius. This is a great time when you explore the city while soaking in the beautiful winter sun. This type of weather is mostly for short trips and many honeymooners. You can visit the Robbers cave, Buddha temple, Malsi deer park, and many more places. You should carry heavy woolen clothes.

Kalsang Ama Cafe

It is located at Rajpur Road, Dehradun. The timings are 11 am to 11 pm. My Wife's Place is a delightful casual dining restaurant that will gladden you with an outspread menu that is fairly priced, It's worth a visit more than once.

Sunrise Bakers

It is the most famous bakery in Ghoshi Gali, Near Clock Tower, Dehradun. The most famous products in the bakery are Cakes, Pastries, Rusk, Cookies, Biscuits, Muffins, and also Eggless bakery products.

Ellora’s Melting Moment

Ellora’s Melting Moment is a very old and famous bakery located in Dehradun. The most selling product of the bakery is truffle cake, They also male customized cakes. It’s a place worth trying.
