Chail is a small hill station, located in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Popularly known for Chail Palace and the World’s Highest Cricket Ground, Chail was the former Capital of Patiala and was built by the Maharaja of Patiala, who eloped with the daughter of the Commander-in-Chief of the British army, due to which he was banished from Shimla. Although it is a small hill station of Himachal Pradesh, located at a distance of approximately 44km from Shimla, has a lot of attractions to explore. Apart from a number of attractions, Chail also has immense scenic beauty. The view of the mountains will leave you spell-bound. Chail is the best place for sightseeing and adventure activities.

Chail Geography

Chail, a small hill station of Himachal Pradesh is perched at an elevation of 2250m above sea level and is surrounded by deodar and pine trees. It is situated on the banks of river Sandhupul. Three hillocks that comprise the hill station of Chail are Pandewa, Rajgarh, and Sadh Tibba. The town offers plenty of trekking and camping activities for tourists and attracts several tourists every year.

School PlayGround

The School Play Ground or the Cricket Ground was established during the time of Maharaja Bhupender Singh, who made Chail his summer capital. He was very fond of cricket thus established the highest cricket ground in the world, perched at an elevation of 7500ft above sea level. It is sometimes also used as a polo ground and currently is under the supervision of the army because it is present in the cantonment area. One can walk around and take pictures but one cannot enter the ground. It is being used as a school playground and also has a basketball court and some goal posts for football as well. There is a small tree house inside the playground, which was believed to have been built by the Maharaja himself.

Chail Palace Hotel

The history of the Chail Palace hotel dates back to the year 1891 when it was built by the then Maharaja of Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, who made this palace his summer palace. In the later years, the palace was purchased by Himachal Tourism and then turned into a heritage hotel, which still stands in Chail and is one of the popular tourist spots in Chail. The Chail Palace Hotel is an ancient and heritage hotel, offering plenty of choices for accommodation and also serves delicious International and Indian cuisines. The interior of the hotel is going to surprise you as one can feel the luxury in the interior itself. There is a lawn and a garden for you to take evening strolls and the location of the hotel amidst the mountain offers a picturesque view of the valley.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary

The Chail Wildlife Sanctuary was used for hunting by the royals, however, the government declared it as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1976. The sanctuary has a good number of birds and animals. Perched at an elevation of 7152ft above sea level, the wildlife sanctuary is also an important tourist hotspot and one must visit the place when in Chail. Wildlife sightings include wild boar, flying squirrel, European Red Deer, and Himalayan Black Bear. 

Kali Ka Tibba

Situated amidst the hills, Kali Ka Tibba is a temple in Chail which is one of the must-visit places in Chail. Kali Ka Tibba is dedicated to Goddess Kali, attracting a good number of tourists every year. Popularly known as Kali Devi Temple, the temple provides stunning views of Chail and witness the beauty of Shivalik and Choor Chandni Ranges. One can also spot some rare wildlife species. The name Solan has been taken from the name of a Hindu Goddess Shooloni Devi. Every year, in the month of June, a fair is held, dedicated to Shooloni Devi. The fair lasts for 3 days and people from all over prefer visiting the destination during this time of the year. Solan has several ancient monasteries, and offers picturesque views, making the place even more beautiful.

The month of June marks the onset of the monsoon in Chail. Monsoon brings heavy rains and lasts till the month of September. It rains heavily in the monsoon, resulting in landslides and blockage of roads. The maximum temperature of Chail in monsoon rises up to 44℃ and the minimum temperature drops to 21℃.

Chail experiences winters between the months of October to February. The winters of Chail are cold and chilly and it often snows during the winter season. Chail By Air

The nearest airport from Chail is Shimla Airport, in the Jabarhatti area, located at a distance of 63km from Chail. Outside the airport, one can find several taxis and cabs that one can hire to reach Chail.

Kalka Railway Station, located at a distance of 81km from Chail, is the nearest railway station to Chail. Apart from regular trains, there is a toy train that operates from Kalka to Shimla which one can use to reach Shimla and then hire a taxi to reach Chail. Popular trains from Delhi to Kalka Railway Station are Himalayan Queen Express, Sainagar Shirdi Express, etc.

Chail By Road
