Bhimtal History

Bhimtal is a small paradise near the Kumaon region about 22 km away from the Nainital district. Bhimtal is a 200-year-old town with a historical story. The town is named after the popular character of Mahabharat, whose name was Bhim. It is believed that Bhim visited the bank of Bhimtal Lake and the old Shiva temple during the exile to quench his thirst and also built a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. In history it is mentioned that the Old Shiva temple was reconstructed by Baz Bahadur, a king of the Chand Dynasty in the 17th Century now it is referred to as the new Shiva Temple. While crossing the Bhimtal after 5 km you will find the Hidimba Parvat which is named after Bhim’s demon wife “Hidimba”. Now there is an attractive wildlife sanctuary named “Vankhandi Ashram” After moving the 2 km away from Hidimba Parvat you will find the mesmerizing lake called Damayanti Tal. This lake is considered to be a holy place by the locals. 

Bhimtal has many historical linkages and unique tourist attractions which make vicinity in itself. That’s why Bhimtal is one of the most famous destinations in Uttarakhand It’s always worth visiting Bhimtal for its culture, tradition, and stunning views.

Bhimtal Geography

Bhimtal abodes the Bhimtal lake which is the largest of all the lakes nearby Uttarakhand covering 72 hectares. Bhimtal is situated at an altitude of 4,490 ft sea level with a population of around 8000 people according to the census 2011. Gargi River also known as Gala Nadi that originates from Garg Parvat also called village Gagar near the Bhimeshwar temple in the Nainital district. The pedestrian road is also connected to Kathgodam and is still in use that connects different regions of Kumaon, Nepal & Tibet. It is also said that this was a part of the silk route.

Bhimtal Lake

Bhimtal Lake is the center attraction of Bhimtal. It is one of the largest lakes in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It attracts major tourists for the serenity, calmness, and picturesque location of surrounding as the Bhimtal lake is spread 47 Hectares. The most common activities in Bhimtal lake is feeding the ducks while  Boating with the view of rich flora and fauna and enjoying the street-side food. The 'C' shaped Bhimtal lake has fresh and clear water while on the one side of the lake there is Bhimtal Dam built by the Britishers in 1883 with 12 gates now it supplies the drinking water and helps the locals in agriculture. Best place in Bhimtal to make unforgettable memories. The Entry time in Bhimtal Lake is 9 AM to 6 PM while there is no ticket fee but if you are interested in boating then have to spend around Rs 150 after that enjoy the beautiful ride.

Bhimtal Aquarium 

Bhimtal Aquarium is situated on the island of Bhimtal lake only can be reached by Boating. Bhimtal aquarium prior was a restaurant now its convert to the aquarium to keep clean lake and surroundings by  Nainital Lake Development Authority. In the Bhimtal aquarium, you can find various kinds of fish domestically as well as international fish from countries like China, South Africa, and Mexico. The ticket price of the Bhimtal aquarium for an adult is 60 Rs and for children is half of the adult ticket price and the exploration time is 1 hour. It is quite a famous place that attracts tourists and kids are loved to visit this place. 

Victoria Dam 

 Victoria Dam offers a mesmerizing natural view. It is located at the end of Bhimtal lake which is 40 ft high built-in 1883. This place is located on one end of the lake its surrounded by beautiful flowers and gardens both sides have the best panoramic view of the lake. The best time to visit victoria dam is October to May.

Hidimba Parvat

Hidimba Parvat is one of the best attractions in Bhimtal. This beautiful hill is located just 5 km away from the Bhimtal. Dhungari Temple was built by Maharaja Bahadur Singh in the year 1553 but local believes that earlier temple was established and dedicated to Bhim’s wife. Mountain is covered in the lush green forest Now the new sanctuary is constructed there by the great environmentalist  Vankhandi Maharaj known as “Vankhandi Ashram” were a lot of wild animals and used as shelters for animals that attract a large number of tourists.

Garg Parvat

Garg Parvat is the source of the river Gargi also known as Gola Nadi, It is one of the dense greenery hill rocks apart from that you can do trekking to parvat and enjoy the picturesque environment. The best time to visit is October to May month these two months are best and enjoyable. While in the winter there is cold also happens the snowfall apart from that in monsoon there is a heavy rainfall so there’s always a risk of landslide. 

Nal Damyanti Lake

Nal Damyanti Lake is just located 2 km from Bhimtal lake. This lake having a beautiful history in itself. It is named after king Nala and his wife Queen Damyanti. You can just walk around the lake and see the old house made up in the traditional Kumaoni architecture find a beautiful spot to get the serenity and calmness of this place. 

Butterfly Research center

Butterfly Research center is one of the ideal places for lovers of Butterfly. The beautiful research center is located 150-year-old colonial in Jones Estate which is just 2 km away from the Bhimtal lake In this center, you can find the more than 245 species of Butterfly like kites, beetles, spiders, and more. This butterfly research center having the fourth largest butterfly in India. The different types of guides are also available for tourists. The entry fee is Rs 40 for one person and at the end, don’t forget to enjoy the meal in the fundraiser cafe.

Folk culture Museum

Folk culture Museum also called “Lok Sanskriti Sangrahalaya” was founded in 1983. This museum is specially dedicated to the Kumaoni people’s life story in form of painting and wooden craft. The museum has three sections where the first is a cultural section that belongs to nature and heritage painting, the second is dedicated to beautifully cave art and the third section is for the Tibetan, Folk, and Tribal arts. If you want to learn & explore deeply Uttarakhand then it should be on your bucket list where you can saw the Tradition, Culture, ancient manuscripts, display of god and goddess, and more past about Uttarakhand. The ticket fee for the adult is Rs 50 and you can explore within 90 mins.

Bhimeshwara Temple 

Bhimeshwara Temple most famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on the bank of Bhimtal lake near the dam. the temple although named after Bhima is devoted to Lord Shiva according to local belief second brother of Pandavas  Bhim came here during the vanvas, That’s why the whole Bhimtal is dedicated to him. In the 17th Century again this temple was reconstructed by “Raja Baz Bahadur” a Chand king of Kumaon. In Shivratri crowd of devotees takes place 

Nag Karkotak Temple

Nag Karkotak Temple is located at the highest peak of Bhimtal. You can reach it by 3.5 km of trekking from Bhimtal. It is dedicated to Karkotak Nag Devta (Serpent God) also known as Nag Mandir. According to local beliefs if you visit this temple with a good heart and pure mind then you will be free from the risk of snakes in life. A large number of devotees came to the event of Rishi Panchami to worship the Serpent God.

Naukuchia Tal

Naukuchia Tal means Nine cornered lake. The length of the lake is around 1 km and has a depth of 40 meters approximately. It is blessed with the scenic beauty of nature offering panoramic vistas There is an ample number of activities you can do near Naukuchia Tal are boating, rowing, paddling, and yachting. Don’t forget to plan an unforgettable trip to Naukuchia Tal with your loved ones at any time of the year.

Haldwani (approx 28.5 Km from Bhimtal)

Haldwani's words come from the Haldu trees also known as “kadamb” the largest producer in this particular region. Haldwani is famous for its natural beauty and panoramic view. The whole area is covered with dense forest and the Gaula River. Haldwani is also known as the gateway of the spectacular Kumaon region in India. The best place to visit Haldwani is Sanjay Van for a  famous picnic spot, bird watching and Haidakhan Ashram is a destination for temples and caves. It is also the nearest destination from Bhimtal which is just 26 km away 

Sattal (approx 13.8 Km from Bhimtal)

Sattal is a connection of the seven freshwater lakes named Ram Tal, Purna Tal, Laxman Tal, Sita Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal, Garud Tal, and Sukh Tal. These all lakes come under the Kumaon region from Sattal to Bhimtal distance is around 40 km. Mukteshwar (approx 38.5 Km from Bhimtal)

Mukteshwar is 65 km from the Bhimtal. The Mukteshwar is famous for the Old Lord Shiva temple Which is 350 Years old known as Mukteshwar Temple. According to old local people's beliefs, lord shiva killed the demon at this spot and gave the Mukti to him. It is situated on the top of a mountain where you can find a marvelous and breathtaking view of the Himalayas

Jim Corbett National Park (approx 79.4 Km from Bhimtal)

Jim Corbett National Park It is one of the oldest and first National Park of India established in Year 1936. The name is dedicated in the memory of Late Jim Corbett great naturalist, eminent conservationist. The park is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas, Ramnagar which is just 75 km away from Bhimtal. It is most famous because of the largest number of tigers and the highest among the Indian National Park. Ranikhet 

It is also called the Queen of Kumaon Hills which is situated in Almora district of Uttarakhand at an elevation 1829 Mts above sea level and 57 km away from the Bhimtal. Bhimtal in Winter is very snowy Bhimtal. The maximum temperature is 12while the minimum temperature is sub-zero levels to -3, Duration of winter in Bhimtal is November to mid-February. This time the strictly outdoor activities are closed and not recommended to visit Bhimtal  in the winter season 

How to Reach Bhimtal 

If you are going to the paradise of hill Bhimtal situated 22 km away from Nainital with the co-ordinates of the Nearest railway station is Kathgodam and closest Airport is Pantnagar. If you are traveling from Delhi distance will be approximately 300 km which will take 7 to 8 hours to cover. 

Bhimtal by Road

Bhimtal by Road is much well connected by the motorable road from Nainital which connects almost all the cities of Uttarakhand. If you are traveling from Delhi using public transport then first you have to go to Anand Vihar ISBT where you can take easily a bus to Kathgodam or Nainital. Private taxis are always available for destinations like Nainital, Kathgodam, or Haldwani. After reaching the Nainital takes the state bus terminals to reach Bhimtal cheaply and economically, While the Private taxi can lose your pocket to 300 to 500 rs for one way to reaching Bhimtal. 

Bhimtal by Railways

Bhimtal by Railways Kathgodam is the nearest railway station 21 km from the Bhimtal. Kathgodam has different routes and the most frequent arrival and departure of trains. After reaching Kathgodam you have to take the Taxi or Cabs and Buses are also available.

Bhimtal By Airways  

Bhimtal by Airways is the most convenient and nearest Airport is Pantnagar Airport which is 58 km from Bhimtal and connected by the Motorable Roads. Taxis are always available can be covered in 2 hours journey. Air India has regular flights every day with the stoppage of Dehradun in the duration of 2hrs15min.
