How to Reach Langkawi

Langkawi may appear to be a remote group of islands in the Andaman Sea, separated by the Malacca Strait by some 30 kilometres from the nearest point on Malaysia's western coast, but it is well connected to other parts of Malaysia and adjacent nations. To Langkawi's main island, there are regular air and sea connections. However, because Langkawi is several miles off the coast, there are no road or rail connections from Malaysia's mainland up to the island. If you plan to travel by rail or road, you must first travel to a place on Peninsular Malaysia's northwestern coast, near Langkawi, and then use a ferry or boat service to reach the island.

• Langkawi by Air

Both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis have paid parking lots adjacent to their jetties. Tourists who want to access Langkawi by boat from the mainland, such as Kuala Lumpur, are increasingly using Kuala Perlis as a departure point. This is because the ferry voyage from Kuala Perlis to Kuala Kedah is shorter. In 2015/16, the government upgraded essential facilities such as cafés, parking, and so on. From Kuala Perlis, there are more than 30 ferries to Langkawi.

• Langkawi by Train

While there is no train service from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, the Malayan Railway Keretapi Tana Melayu (KTM) operates comfortable and affordable train trips from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi. It all begins in Singapore. Taking the train provides a beautiful view of the countryside. This is a slower railway than the bus because it runs overnight.
